The magnificent seven at Wimbledon
A team combining youth and experience from Crawley Sword Club, finished an admirable 3rd in the Wimbledon Invitation Challenge, despite being a team member short.
Seven teams of eight fencers competed in an event that featured all three fencing disciplines of foil, epee and sabre. It was a fantastic atmosphere as the games got underway, as the teams established each other talents in the qualifying round. They had much to consider too as the Crawley team collectively won over 70% of their bouts sending six of the team to battle it out in the top division of their respective weapon group.
In the Men’s Foil it was 14 year olds Tim Innes and Josh Renaut who took on some of the best senior fencers in the area including England Cadet Chris Coton. The boys impressed many with their skills and determination and finished 6th and 7th in the field of sixteen gaining valuable points. In the Ladies foil again it was the talented youth of 14 year old Chiara McDermott that collected 2nd place after a final place fence off with Ayesha Fihosy of Salle Joseph.
In the Men’s Epee Dudley Tredgar and Iain Watts fought hard in their respective second round divisions, Dudley only dropping two of his seven bouts and Iain just one. This helped keep them at the top end of the final rankings to secure just short of the maximum possible points for the team.
Mark Tucker and Charlie Winter represented the Club in the Men’s Sabre where Mark showed his experience losing only one of his bouts all day. This sent him into a final place play off against Tim Love of the Poly team, who just narrowly beat the exhausted Tucker. Charlie won nine of his thirteen bouts, to finish in the top five contributing his part in adding to the teams growing point tally.
As the final bouts came to an end, there was much anticipation as it was impossible to know which team had won. The Crawley team were delighted to have been announced in 3rd place, just a few points behind the runners up, knowing an extra team member would have helped them give the winners Streatham Fencing Club a really close run. It was great days fencing and enjoyed by all thanks the hospitality of the host Club and the talented Crawley team is already talking their return at next year’s event. |
